Buffy older by scarymime
Title: The Next Generation
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Characters: Buffy, Willow, Xander
Rating: teen
Word count: 640
Spoilers: Includes vague spoilers for Star Trek XI as well as not-vague ones for events in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Warnings: None needed.
Summary: Joyce Summers, Trekkie.
Notes: Written for [info]malnpudl, whose asked for someone of the older BtVS generation who'd watched the original Star Trek either rewatching it or seeing the new movie. I ended up writing something a little different from the prompt, but the spirit is there, I hope. Incidentally, this story takes no account of any events in the Buffy Season 8 comics.

Pairing: Giles/Ethan
Rating: Adult
Series: The seventh and final story in the With Your Crooked Heart series; click here and scroll down for the series masterlist.
Warning (very spoilery): (skip) Terminal illness, character death, suicide.
Summary: Ethan rages; Giles doesn't.
Word count: 1080
Notes: I think this is a happy ending. Your mileage may vary.

Title: Oxford Revisited
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Giles/Ethan
Rating: Adult
Series: Fifth story in the With Your Crooked Heart series; click here and scroll down for the series masterlist.
Warning: None needed.
Summary: Giles remembers the good times.
Word count: 5840
Notes: The internal chronology of this series varies from the writing order; I wrote this story shortly after "Going On," so it's more beginner-ish than "Addiction" and "Debt." The title's stolen from Brideshead Revisited, of course, and Giles's Oxford owes more to Waugh's than it does to what I imagine Oxford was really like in the 1970s.

Title: Addiction

Pairing: Ethan/Giles
Rating: adult
Series: Third story in the With Your Crooked Heart series; click here and scroll down for the series masterlist.
Warning (somewhat spoilery): (skip) Domestic abuse, graphic violence, explicit references to torture.
Summary: Ethan remembers the bad times.
Word count: 1580
Notes: Set during the events of the previous story, "Going On," but from Ethan's POV. I still like a lot of things about this story.

and another old story

Giles drinking tea by literati
This is another old fanfic that I only posted to mailing lists and Geocities, not to LJ; since Geocities is closing down, I'm adding those stories here.

Title: Going On
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Giles/Ethan
Rating: adult
Series: Second story in the With Your Crooked Heart series; click here and scroll down for a series masterlist.
Warning (somewhat spoilery): (skip) Explicit references to torture and murder; references to rape.
Summary: Giles rescues Ethan from the Initiative. Now what?
Word count: 10,298
Notes: This was written in the summer of 2003, so it doesn't take into account later Buffyverse canon from Angel. This isn't the old story I'm most embarrassed by, but only because in a fit of fannish giddiness I once wrote Xander/Spike wedding fic (which I am not reposting). Hurt/comfort, obvious lack of research into medical and psychological issues, and so much schmoop that even a schmoop-positive friend of mine got twitchy reading this story. It's amazing how many badfic tropes I picked up very quickly; fortunately, I soon met some good writers who provided a much better example.

Going On )

an old, old story

  • Jul. 2nd, 2009 at 8:07 PM
Ethan lovely by glossing
This is the first of several Buffyverse stories that I wrote before I had an LJ, and which were posted on my Geocities website but never here. Geocities will be closing soon, and although I'm slightly tempted to consign these stories to deserved oblivion, I've decided not to. They're around elsewhere on the internet, through the Wayback Machine if nothing else, and at least here they're under my control as far as formatting, headers, and shamefaced disclaimers so on.

As it happens, this is the very first piece of fanfiction I ever wrote. I posted it to a couple of Yahoo groups back in May of 2003. It got some positive comments, including a couple of the "write more" type, and I was so new to fandom that I did write more; "Demons" ended up being the first story in a series. Some of the later stories are decent-ish, which is another reason for not burying this in an unmarked grave at midnight with a stake through its pixels.

Title: Demons
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Ethan/Giles
Rating: Adult
Series: First story in the With Your Crooked Heart series; click here and scroll down for a series master list.
Warnings: (skip) References to domestic violence.
Summary: A missing scene from "A New Man."
Word count: 2923
Notes: Allow me to restate that this is the first fanfic I ever wrote. I apologize for the purple prose and the mix of first-person and second-person point of view. I do think the basic idea's good, though.

This evening I saved copies of some old fics from my website (so as not to lose them forever when Geocities is taken down later this year). This led to poking around in my Buffyverse fic folder and discovering a bunch of fragments, some of which I kind of like. Since I have no new fic right now, I'll share some old unfinished things.

All Buffyverse, all unfinished and completely unrevised.

summer of Giles fic

Giles drinking tea by literati
Somewhat to my surprise, I managed to get my Summer of Giles story finished on time. *sigh of relief*

Title: Of Woe or Wonder
Author: [info]kindkit
Pairing: Giles/Ethan
Rating: R
Warning: (skip) Character death (in backstory).
Summary: There are things Giles will never know.
Spoilers: For Buffy comics, issues #3 and #4. Highlight here for a brief (spoilery) background explanation if you haven't been reading the comics: A covert government group, apparently descended from the Initiative, has decided that the slayers are a threat to humanity. Ethan, imprisoned by this group, comes to Buffy in a dream and helps her overcome their attack. During this dream, apropos of nothing in particular, Ethan says, "I am more an antique Roman than a Dane." When Buffy tries to rescue Ethan, she finds him dead, shot by one of the group's leaders.
Notes: Title, cut text, and some bits of dialogue come from Hamlet. Misquotations in dialogue are deliberate.

Gakked from [info]likeadeuce:

Comment with two characters I write, and I'll tell you about their first kiss.

Note that it doesn't have to be a pairing I normally write. Or even two characters from the same fannish source. Or even (this is my variation) characters I've written before, provided that I know the fandom well enough to answer.

*waits with glee and nervousness*

return of the daily ficlet!

I'm feeling a bit better, so I'm picking up the ficlets again. I rather like how today's turned out.

Title: Still Life With Lovers
Fandom: Buffyverse
Pairing: Ethan/Giles
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None
Length: 610 words
Written for: [info]47_trek_47, whose prompt was "peace."
Notes: Giles quotes from T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." Cut text from Jacques Brel's "Chanson des vieux amants"--it means "Of course we had storms." I'm sorry there's no summary, but I really can't summarize a fic this short without either being irritatingly vague or spoiling the whole thing.

Bien sur, nous eĆ»mes des orages )

And of course I'm taking requests again; first request gets a ficlet. Give me a fandom, a character or two (or a pairing), and a prompt. Fandoms I can write:

TV: BtVS/AtS, CSI, BSG, Rome, Dresden Files (show only, not books)

Comics: X-Men (movieverse, Ultimateverse, 616 to a limited extent), Hellblazer, new X-Factor, the Authority through "Earth Inferno," Cable & Deadpool, Top Ten (plus The Forty-Niners and Smax), Watchmen, Sandman

Books: Harry Potter, Mary Renault's novels, Katherine Kurtz's Deryni novels, Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner novels, Melissa Scott and Lisa A. Barnett's Pointsman novels, Reginald Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe novels. Plus a lot of others I can't think of offhand, so try me.

Movies: Talented Mr. Ripley, Brokeback Mountain, Lawrence of Arabia, Dark Harbor, tons of others. As with books, try me. If I can't/don't want to write it, I'll let you know.

It's really, really weird what will get a person writing. Or at least, what will get me writing. This little story was inspired by an old Batman comic in which Dick Grayson takes up folksinging. (Go on. Click the link. You know you want to.)

I was taking drabble and ficlet requests yeterday for the International Day of Slash. Over in the original post you'll find a Chas/John (Hellblazer) drabble and a Wesley/Giles ficlet. The others, I'm posting here.

Giles/Oz, for pinkdormouse )

Apparently it's the International Day of Slash. Plus, I've been getting writing anxiety that I want to try and get over. So, I'm taking slash drabble requests.

I'll write a drabble, or very short ficlet, for the first 5 (maybe more if it goes well) requests. You can ask for any pairing in any of my active fandoms: BtVS, Harry Potter, Hellblazer, X-Men (movieverse or, if it's a character I know, comics). I'll also take a shot at Firefly, BSG, Good Omens, and the Aubrey/Maturin novels if anybody feels like it.

ETA: Okay, requests are starting to come in. I'll just post the drabbles here.

First of all, thanks to all of you who offered prompts to help me in my horrible blockage. I ended up going a different direction, but that does not diminish my gratitude.

So how, you ask, did I find inspiration? From the media player on my computer. I decided to hit "random shuffle" and find a story idea in whatever song came up first. Which turned out to be Town Called Malice by the Jam, one of my favorite songs. Plus the Jam is a very appropriate band for Giles. So, I bow before the wisdom of my computer and the genius of Paul Weller.

Title: Flight
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Summary: It's a long way from London to Los Angeles.
Notes: Written for [info]summer_of_giles. The cut-text comes, not surprisingly, from "Town Called Malice."
Extra Note for Firefox Users: The "J" in the fourth paragraph is supposed to be a fancy squiggle, but when I specify the symbol font in LJ, it doesn't seem to display properly in Firefox. *sigh*

Here at last, [info]glossing, is your birthday fic. It's Jazzverse, from waaaaaaaay back when Giles and Oz first met. Sorry I wasn't able to write something in your current fandom interests, but . . . I hope you enjoy this. *hugs you lots and lots*

Title: Things I'm Learning About You
Pairing: Giles/Oz
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None
Summary: The first morning after the first night.
Notes: This story is part of It's Like Jazz, a series cowritten by [info]glossing and me. But it's basically a stand-alone. All you need to know is that Giles has recently arrived in Sunnydale (Buffy isn't even there yet). The previous night, he met Oz at the Espresso Pump and they ended up back at Giles' apartment. The story of how they met is here, if you'd like to read it. Title and cut-text of this story are from "Getting to Know You," because . . . it seemed to fit.

The Doctor was an inveterate underliner, a scribbler in margins, a very unpassive reader. Some of his oldest, most precious volumes in the TARDIS library were swamped by his commentaries from successive readings over the years. All of the Doctors had added their contributions--picking fights with the original author, then with each other as their various, hotly held opinions clashed and altered. To the Doctor his own books were the place his previous selves met in a busy, textual polyphony. All his books were dense palimpsests of gripes.
